Restoration & Preservation
Since the 1970’s restoration, the church has allowed our board to care for the cemetery for them. In 2011, the church appointed longtime board member, Kenneth Kleinpeter as cemetery sexton. He is therefore responsible foremost for the sacred preservation and treatment of this hallowed site. Then, he works very closely with archaeologists and artisans alike to understand and enhance the site with respect to its historic importance.
The 2013 Board of Directors and Officers:
T. Semmes Favrot, president
Ryan Seidemann, vice-president
Kenneth P. Kleinpeter, Sr., secretary-treasurer
William “Bobby” Adams

History Of Highland
On June 9, 1819, Garig donated the cemetery to the Congregation of the Roman Cath0lic Church in Baton Rouge, essentially, St. Joseph Church located in the town of Baton Rouge about three miles away. There is no evidence that the cemetery was ever actually, officially consecrated as a Catholic burial ground but it was certainly treated as such well into the twentieth century.
