Highland Cemetery is owned by St. Joseph Cathedral Roman Catholic Church located in downtown Baton Rouge. Because the cemetery was located three miles away from the church, a formidable distance for most of its 200 year history, it was always taken care of by the families and friends of the interred.
Since the 1970's restoration, the church has allowed our board to care for the cemetery for them. In 2011, the church appointed longtime board member, Kenneth Kleinpeter as cemetery sexton. He is therefore responsible foremost for the sacred preservation and treatment of this hallowed site. Then, he works very closely with archaeologists and artisans alike to understand and enhance the site with respect to its historic importance.
